Meet the Client: Julia Jones | A Modern Take on Headshots

Most of the women I work with own their own businesses, whether it’s a six-figure operation or it’s a side hustle.

But occasionally I get a client who considers photography as a career move in other ways. Case in point: Julia Jones.

Julia works in finance. After some restructuring at the company she most recently worked for, which left her with some severance but jobless, she saw an opportunity to shape her future by positioning herself as a current, savvy businesswomen in a way a résumé just can’t communicate: Photos that captured her personality and values.

These photos would be used in slightly different ways across channels where she might attract a new position: LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and more.

If you’ve been tuned into AG for a while, you probably know I feel very strongly that every social media platform has its own culture.

So rather than sitting down for headshots that would all have the same vibe, we created poses and outfits and moods that would work for each of the various channels, while also creating a cohesive overall personal brand for Julia.

The Mood Boards

Julia sent me one of the more impressive mood boards I’ve seen. It was clear to me right away that she not only had a color scheme (which is usually the easy part), but a photographic style she liked for portraits (pictured next); she also had a type of vibration she wanted to emit about herself (fun-loving, approachable, and sharp), and she had a clear target audience she was reach (even though that target audience was HR at specific financial institutions, rather than a customer base).

Julia’s personal brand vision reminded me a lot of the company formerly known as Causebox, now Alltrue. The overall vibe was open and friendly and smart, and the photography style wasn’t exactly like everyone else’s for the last 8-10 years; it was mostly sharply in-focus shots almost reminiscent of film.

This gave me a really strong place to come from when I approached posing, outfits, color integration, and even hair!

We only had an hour so I suggested we use The Valentine Room, a local studio with a variety of modern furniture and props, plus three tall windows that let in great natural light.

We used the seasonal rolling backdrop that was sort of a babydoll pink (easy to tweak in Photoshop to match Julia’s brand colors), as well as a modern stool, the sofa, some plants, and the windows to create atmosphere that matched her mood board.

And I really like how they came out! Definitely a different style for AG, but it all came together precisely the way I pictured. What do YOU think?
