Photographing for Jook has been one of my favorite projects.

This black-owned business in Dover, NH has all the ingredients of a perfect New England hotspot: a location on a bustling street corner, plenty of seating, giant windows, and of course hearty portions of classic foods—with a twist.

What’s the twist? The short, almost In-and-Out-length menu is completely Southern-inspired, a pleasant distinction from the many New England seafood menus nearby.

If you’re wondering how you missed this great food experience, the truth is that not only is Jook new-ish; it’s also a well-kept secret.

It opens in the afternoons in the spot where Sassy Biscuit Co. welcomes brunchers in the morning. It’s definitely a local, word-of-mouth establishment right now—but a year from now, I doubt it will have been able to keep itself so under wraps!

My work with Jook has been done through my Subscription Social Photography program, so I get to take photos for them once a month or so.

The photography is split between my Sony mirrorless camera and my iPhone, for a mix of elevated images and more real-time feeling images on their Instagram feed. (All the images here were shot on my Sony.)

They also share a ton of images that were captured by their customers, which is awesome.

One of the things we’re trying to do more of is integrate people into Jook’s images, to really illustrate the community vibe.

It’s kind-of a New England thing, though, that customers don’t often like to be photographed without a heads-up (you know, to choose a great outfit, put on some makeup, that sort of thing)—so doing on the fly has been tough.

If you’re interested in modeling in exchange for sandwiches, drop me a line on Instagram at @alexisthegreek and maybe you can be a part of our next sesh!
